5/4/2014 · I inherited a John Deere 318 that seemed to be working fine. I had to replace a battery cable because the terminal clamp was broken. Everything seemed good, and it started up and ran after the replacement fine. I engaged the front PTO without a problem and the transmission engaged just fine because I drove it around for a minute.
’86 318 stalls when pto is engaged Greg Yesterday when I went to mowe my lawn I reved up the engine and turned on the pto it ran for a second; then the pto kicked out and the engine died.

Occasionally over the past year my John Deere Sabre would be difficult to start, and more recently every time I would fully engage the PTO lever for the mower deck, the engine would die. $500 in parts and labor later (carb, plugs, fuel pump, fuel filter, battery) I discovered that the wiring harness/plug behind the key on/off switch was loose.
