In 1875, its name was changed in honor of a Catholic priests patron saint. Early Hispanos used the term Ruidoso to describe a noisy creek. Todays Ruidoso grew up around Dowlins Mill. Will Dowlin survived his brother, after an employee shot Captain Paul dead.
The village that slowly developed shortened the name to Ruidoso. Ruidosos oldest building, Dowlin Mill, was built around 1869 by Paul Dowlin, who had served in the Army at nearby Fort Stanton. Like many discharged soldiers, Dowlin and his brother, Will, saw their chance to make a life in the new territory.
